About the Author

Joy Hakim, a former teacher, editor, and writer won the prestigious James Michener Prize for her series, A History of US, which has sold over 4 million copies nationwide. A graduate of Smith College and Goucher College she spent years teaching students from elementary school up to the college level. Excellent accompanyment for the text and student guide.

I'm glad I purchased this to go with the textbook and student study guide for homeschooling. Although some of the activities suggested are for large groups and aren't pertinent to my needs, it has the answers to questions in the student guild, and it is a great tool for starting discussions. So much of the material parallels things I'm seeing in our country now, so this particular book is very good for teaching critical thinking skills. This series is also very good for secular homeschooling. It covers religion from the standpoint of how it has impacted the history of our country without teaching any particular doctrine. I am a big fan of Joy Hakin's books. This will be my 8th year to homeschool various grandchildren, and I've gone through a lot of curriculum. Her books are among the very best I've used.

Important for everyone in graphic design!

I'm a graphic design instructor, and this book will now be required reading. It addresses pertinent issues such as plagiarism, appropriation, greenwashing, and crowdsourcing. The text contains excellent discussion questions and resources. If you are an instructor, this book will be a valuable reference. If you are beginning your career in graphic design, this book will help you wrestle with issues you will undoubtedly face in your professional life. Interesting, applicable, easy to read.

As a graphic design professor and practitioner, I wholeheartedly endorse this book. It provides a comprehensive overview of the pressing issues facing students as they embark into the world of graphic design. This book is an indispensable guide to navigating all of the ethical pitfalls and potholes of an industry fraught with many gray areas. Additionally, it contains clear definitions, helpful illustrations, and thought-provoking discussion questions to aid comprehension. I will be including this text as required reading in my graphic design courses next semester. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in issues of ethical responsibility whether as a designer, student, professor, or conscientious consumer.

Excellent book by a known author on knowledge management in organizations. Details how organizations rely on, utilize, nurture, or destroy and lose knowledge and knowhow. Thinking for a Living talks about managing knowledge workers, this book helps you to understand what 'knowhow' is. It is not simple, and often very un-obvious where and with whom it resides in an organization.

Great KM Systems Template

The authors wrote this book 178 page book in 2000--it is still very relevant in 2004. Not only is this book clearly written providing a wealth of content on KM systems, it is also provides a very practical and realistic template for initiating a KM system.
The final chapter was a wonderful summary of the practicals to implementation:
-start small
-business problems relates to knowledge (loss of customers and key personnel, low win rates on service engagements, poorly designed products, etc.).
-a knowledge system is more than technology. You may start with an intranet and Lotus notes. More than a third in $, time and effort on the tech part, you're neglecting the other key factors.
-Getting content will take a while. It's easy enough to put the technology in place but getting the organization contribute and use content is a behavioral challenge. So, assess the culture of your organization before launching a knowledge initiative.
"What makes knowledge valuable to organizations is ultimately the ability to make better the decisions and actions on the basis of the knowledge".
