About the Author
Urban Meyer is the head football coach of the Ohio State Buckeyes. In 2014, he led the Buckeyes to their first Big Ten Conference title under his tenure as well as the program's eighth national championship. Meyer served as the head coach of the Bowling Green Falcons from 2001 to 2002, the Utah Utes from 2003 to 2004, and the Florida Gators from 2005 to 2010. He is one of only two coaches to win a National Championship at two different schools.

Hold the Line

as the book jacket states this is a book on leadership and team building by Coach Meyer with the 2014 Ohio State season as the main background. I had bought this book to learn more about Urban Meyer and his secrets to success. This book is filled with his view on how a team should operate to win a championship. He explains that ones behavior is either "above the line or below the line." I particularly liked his description of below the line behavior-B-Blaming, C-complaining, D-defending yourself. That is a good description of a team not in alignment. I also found his 10-80-10 Principle interesting (Ch.8) and like other ideas in this book,can be applied to life endeavors other than football. I learned that Meyer is a committed Catholic with a Father who positively influenced his life. He is an intense competitor who played Minor League Baseball and believes you should improve yourself/team , everyday. If you are a coach, player or fan or you are looking for an inspirational read about college football, this will be worth your while. Recommended.

Outstanding Leadership Book and More

I love coaches books. They are living on the edge of societal changes. In this book Urban Meyer is transparent and honest. It is extremely well written and easy to read. He weaves in his entire career but not in an overbearing way. His life, coaching and leadership lessons are well worth the price of the book. Some people live thirty years one year at a time. Others live 30 years investing year 1 into year 2 and so on. Urban Meyer learned his lessons along the way and share them, pain and all. One of the best leadership books I've read, and I've read a lot.

A little "salve" for a husband who's been "licking his wounds" since this year's Michigan State loss

When it comes to bleeding scarlet and grey (and - apparently and begrudgingly - predominantly black now for one game per year!), there's no one who lives for the Buckeye games more than my husband. Believe it or not, PRIOR to our grandsons' first birthdays, he had trained them - at the conclusion of our singing the Ohio State fight song - to say "Go Bucks!" So given the expectation (with the football program's #1 ranking at the beginning of the season) that they'd be able to head back to a National Championship game this year, the fact that the OH-SO-CLOSE loss to Michigan State not only lost them the Big Ten title, but also has them headed to the Fiesta Bowl instead has made this one of those "ouch" years for him (a "double ouch" since our niece is a Michigan State alum, which prompted an immediate post-game call to said niece, reminding her of her treasonous college choice!) He really lives and breathes this stuff, with his "man-cave" reflecting those loyalties, so I knew I'd have to tread lightly this year when it came to Christmas purchases.

I've lost track of the number of Ohio State football-related books on his shelves - a million, give or take! - so I thought maybe, just maybe he'd want to dive into one of the other half dozen sports bios I'd had under the tree for him this year first. HA! This book - focused on last year's championship season (and all of the great memories it holds for my husband) headed to bed with us Christmas night (I'm thinking about instituting a "no reading past 11pm" rule), and each night since I've been "treated" to a summary of the latest insights, situations, etc. from yet another OSU book he's devouring like it was a steak dinner in front of a man who hadn't eaten for a month. Urban Meyer really does seem committed to living a more even-keeled life, more mindful of his health, while re-committing himself to his family and finding terrific ways to encourage/inspire/motivate the young men who call him "Coach", and my husband's really enjoying this latest offering. I had to kid him last night though... "Now Hon, is this the SAME guy you couldn't say enough negative things about when he was coaching the Gators?" ;-) Hey, as far as I'm concerned, Coach Meyer and the team had another terrific season this year (I actually hate it when our favorite teams are ranked #1 right at the beginning of the year... can't imagine what kind of pressure that puts on players and a coach, with every opponent coming in ready to "leave it all on the field" against the top-ranked team.)

Anyway, I think this book is helping to take the "sting" out of the late season turn of events this past year, and now my sister and I need only to survive New Year's Day (with her hubs being as big of a Notre Dame fan as mine roots for OSU)... I think one of us is going to have a much easier time of it than the other! (GO BUCKS... PLEASE!!!)

Anyone who has spent time in Northern Rhodesia/Zambia should read this book. The author has researched the subject thoroughly and though she is an anthropologist and this is an academic book in one way it is full of memories from people who have lived in the country which makes it an easy read for the layman. Having lived in Zambia myself for many years I so enjoyed immersing myself in it and reliving some very happy times.

The story of the diaspora of Northern Rhodesians is a difficult subject to record in a fair and balanced manner because of the many diverse views of Northern Rhodesians. I think Pamela Shurmer-Smith done an excellent job in weaving together the personal stories of so many people with an unbiased view of the history of our country.

I thought that maybe I was alone in being unable to settle back in England the land of my birth after 21 years in Africa, but I find that the majority of returnees had the same difficulty and many of them have moved on. They either returned to Africa or went to other parts of the world or some even became eternal ‘men in a suitcase’ moving like gypsies from one location to another.

This book brings alive the trauma of having to uproot oneself from one’s long time friends and neighbours when or shortly after Northern Rhodesia became Zambia in 1964. The cruelty was compounded by the restrictions on taking one’s honest and hard earned life savings with one. This was made even worse when currency restrictions were expanded to include personal and household effects. Yes, there were reasons for it but for the average Northern Rhodesian who had no option but to leave; for him to have to leave his own life savings behind was just pure theft on the part of the new regime.

The expatriates who came to Zambia after Independence are a different story from NR’s. They knew they were just hired on a short contract basis and had no illusions about the country becoming their home. Even so many if them feel a strange nostalgia for their years in Zambia that is only too evident in the social media pages.

The residents of Northern Rhodesia were roughly divided into the Government or PA types and the rest. The PA community (the British Colonial Civil Servants) were deliberately transferred from station to station and given 6 months home leave every 3 years to prevent them forming any attachment to their host countries. Despite this many did form strong attachments to Northern Rhodesia (especially those who served in the Northern Rhodesia Police).

The non-PA community was divided into the commercial / trading, the mining and the farming communities. Most of the miners came from South Africa and SR and would work a few years on the mines before returning to their farms down south. After a few bad seasons on the farms they would return to the Copperbelt to save up another grubstake. They had little interest in NR or its peoples and were only there to make money. In a way one could call these temporary sojourners the forerunners of the ‘expatriates’ who came after independence. Even so many of them did form an attachment for the affluent and relaxed Copperbelt lifestyle.

Among the non-PA group and mainly in the trading and farming communities were the ‘settlers’, the real Northern Rhodesians, who actually thought that they were going to live in NRZ for ever and who were prepared to adapt to changing conditions and live under an African dominated government. I identify myself with this group. I think these settlers or at least the ones who had to leave NRZ were the ones who felt the loss most poignantly because they lost not only a comfortable lifestyle and their properties and assets and in some cases their families, but most importantly they lost their dreams. They suffered something like what the Yanks call post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in their troops returning from battle fronts. Time eases the pain but many of us will take the mental scars with us to our graves.

The emigrants had a wide variety of success in their new lives after leaving NRZ from Neville Isdell who became head of the giant Coca-Cola organization to the chap who ended up penniless sleeping in a New Zealand garden shed. Most however returned to the western humdrum life of wage slavery as university bursars, teachers, policemen or lawyers with only their memories of a life in the sun to brighten their dull lives.

The book is generally sad and nostalgic but I found the saddest story was that of Heather Hunt who was born in Broken Hill hospital in 1939. She married Des and they built up a farm near Broken Hill from scratch, even making the bricks themselves. After Des’ death Heather stayed on until July 2014 when she moved to the UK at 75 years old. She had no children left in Zambia to take over the farm and look after her in her old age so she had to sell the farm. I really feel for Heather. I hope she finds some happiness in the years that remain for her. What a crying shame after sticking it out through thick and thin in Northern Rhodesia and Zambia that she has had to leave.

Great manual. It IS an actual book

This is just as described. Great manual. It IS an actual book. I thought it was going to be a loose leaf version like what I have seen in class but I actually prefer this a lot more. It's a pain when you rip pages flipping through them in a binder. WileyPlus is not include (sold seperately).

It's a good manual. But only binder version.

The manual seems pretty good for my class. It's new. The material the manual is made from is flimsy paper. But that's not too big of an issue. Just hard to get in a binder. It's a bit frustrating that they sent the binder version. When I bought the manual it gave me the option of binder or paperback version and I selected the paperback but I still received the paperback. So not sure if this only comes in binder version.

In an environment where standardized testing dominates institutionalized learning at the grade school level, university coursework must reach out and actively pull students onto the stage of the globalized world. It must teach students of their role in global events, the way in which events abroad determine--and are determined by--choices related to purchasing food, voting, and the consumption of natural resources. Textbooks can only hope to accomplish this feat by demonstrating the relevance of current events for students who lack any framework for digesting complex discourse on global politics, regional geography, and economics. The Plaid Avenger's World uses an innovative style of presentation to show students that they are indeed actors in processes outside of their immediate viewing areas. This textbook confronts students with real-world issues in a manner that both entertains and educates, but most importantly, guides students in a direction to engage and understand contemporary media after they finish reading the book.

The first pages of The Plaid Avenger's World introduce key concepts and definitions covered in most freshman-level social science courses: trends in development, population dynamics, and the like. Succeeding all necessary background, the book organizes the world into regions; e.g., Central Asia, Middle East/North Africa, etc. Professor Boyer navigates students through a short history of each region, thereafter setting himself up to position the region within the contemporary political arena. The pages of the text are littered with figures, graphs, and pictures (often containing hilarious captions) that complement the written portions with useful facts. Within each chapter, Professor Boyer also explains how characteristics shared by those living in a region define that specific region, giving legitimacy to the assignment of regions as well as showing how cultures vary around the globe. A fun and entertaining read. The 7th edition is it with a high school edition with a bit less saucy language. This is a great resource for geography and world history teachers looking to beef up their knowledge or as an example of how to put the content into student language.
