Thompson's Study of Base Human Nature

I came to this book via Susan McWilliams Dec 15, 2016 article in The Nation, "This Political Theorist Predicted the Rise of Trumpism. His Name Was Hunter S. Thompson." In it, she posits that Thompson intimately portrays the sort of self-destructive nihilism that rises among those whom the economy and society have cast aside - those who find "the game" completely rigged against them. All of that is there, and, for good measure, Thompson also skewers lemming-like media hype, the over-reaction, strategic conflation, and exaggeration of some law enforcement agencies, and the cluelessness of a doe-eyed public. Beyond this seeming prescience (more like "the more things change, the more they stay the same"), it is a good, ugly read.

An interesting chronicle made too long for its own good. 6/10

Half chronicle, half overlong description of the ways and deeds of the infamous motorcycle gang. Thompson has a sure way of making even mildly interesting stories exciting by means of his amazing abilities as a storyteller, but after the first half of the book the tale starts to bog down, getting repetitive and in some parts relying upon his style to keep the reader going. His own insights about some particular Hell's Angel members are among the best things that this book has to offer, with vivid descriptions of both physique and character. Interesting and solid book, but it would've been better with some weight loss.

"Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" isn't Hunter S. Thompson's best work, this is. With deeper roots in reality, this is the true dawn of Gonzo Journalism. The Fear-and-Loathings take the Gonzo concept off-the-charts and are more an amusing romp or dark commentary. This is journalism rooted in first-hand experience, slightly twisted by a fine mind and writer of the first calibre.

The Kirkwood Highway is an almost six-mile portion of State Route 2 in New Castle County, Delaware. Built as a bypass of Marshallton after the opening of Delaware Park at Stanton in 1937, it was meant to provide Wilmington-area horse-racing fans a straighter and faster route to the track. It is named after a distinguished officer of the American Revolution, Robert Kirkwood Jr., who was born at his familys farm along Polly Drummond Hill Road in Newark in 1756. Since it opened to automobile traffic, the highway has undergone numerous renovations and the scenery along its route has changed dramatically. Today, it is the fifth-busiest roadway in the state and is lined by shopping centers, national retailers, fast-food and chain restaurants, gas stations, subdivisions, and historic sites. Through vintage photographs, Along the Kirkwood Highway takes a nostalgic look back at the travel corridor, its cross streets, and familiar sites along its path.

This brings back lots of memories.

This book brings back a lot of memories of growing up right near the Kirkwood Highway. I wish there were a few more photos of the section I lived closest to, but it gives a pretty good overview of the entire length of the road. I wish the highway was as open now as it was back in the '60's!

I love this book! I spent time analyzing each and every image. Even though most of the photographs are from before my time I found it utterly fascinating to see the way things used to look. I never realized how much of my life has been spent along this highway.

Not good

Stacey's Ex-boyfriend was sort of boring. It was a pretty simple plot that could be used as a side plot. The cover wasn't very nice, either. Stacey's hair looked like a wig and Robert looked about 18. And there was also Stacey's Ex-Best Friend. Why does Stacey have so many exes? Needs improvement. Claudia and the Terrible Truth much better.

Confusing...

This was a very confusing book. Robert is going through a depressing time, and wants to talk to Stacey about it. Guess what? Stacey's Robert's ex-girlfriend. Practically all it talked about was Robert's mood. However, the book was pretty good during the rare moments when Robert was not discussed.

I thought this was a really good book because like someone said it showed the outcomes of a depressed teenager. I thought it was interesting and would have wannted Stacey to go out with Robert again because it looks like they belong together! Keep up the good work Ann! Martin Hill, a native of Santa Fe, New Mexico, is professor of pharmacology at the Ponce Health Sciences University in Ponce, Puerto Rico, where he lives with his wife and son. Along with his scientific background, he has worked in theater, having run a comedy troupe in South Florida.

A good summer read.

I might have had some reservations with the by-the-book detective going rogue like she did but it proved warranted in the end. The female friendship was endearing. I find interesting how Shelley will reconcile her feelings for the not-so-bad "drug dealer". A good summer read.

Shelley, a 31-year-old African-American, works out of the Third Police District of Washington Metro, which extends “from embassies and gentrified townhouses to stretches of urban decay.” The book opens with Shelley being called to the scene of a gruesome murder, the details of which I will kindly omit. The young man who called 911 is 19-year-old Rafael Hooks, the aforementioned brother of the dead man, and Shelley is convinced of his innocence, his confession notwithstanding. Her investigation leads her along unexpected paths, at times putting her in the cross-hairs of the assassin, being drugged in her own home, and not knowing who to trust, including her fellow police officers. But she has to follow her conscience, and won’t stop till she gets to the truth. The various plot lines did have this reader a bit confused at times (although not for too long). The writing, although I did not feel it was particularly elegant, nevertheless pulled me along to the point that, surprisingly to me, I found myself at the end within forty-eight hours of opening it up to the first page.

This is the first in a new police procedural mystery series featuring Shelley Krieg, who is both a fascinating protagonist, and one tough gal. I for one can’t wait for the next one!

Well-crafted and captivating

Never Kill A Friend is a well-crafted mystery with interesting characters, particularly the protagonist, detective Shelly Krieg. Shelly, a 6’ 4” African American woman who works for Washington DC Metro, has a problem. Not only does she believe a jailed murderer is innocent, but worse, she wakes up in the middle of the night to find a corpse in her house.

The book has the most essential earmark of a topnotch detective tale—just when you think you know everything, you discover you don’t know anything.

One of the terrific aspects of the novel is Hill’s use of his environment, Washington DC. He wisely avoids the political aspect and centers his characters activities on the urban and suburban areas. It adds an aspect that dodges the clich� and adds vibrancy to the novels already exciting, brisk pace.

Another sign of a captivating book—it ended all too soon and had me hoping that there will be a sequel.

Unfortunately, the easily acquired orchid has the unwarranted reputation of being difficult to grow--fussy, unforgiving plants that need a home built like a misty cloud forest, with periodic cloudbursts, insects, and the occasional jaguar. Some people devoted bedrooms or basements to their orchids, while others have constructed elaborate glasshouses with different climatic zones, potting rooms, and Mozart piped in to soothe the soul and presumably fortify the plants.

But you can start simply with orchids, raising a few plants on the window sill, outdoors in spring and summer, or under fluorescent lights, and discover that orchids are not fussy at all. In fact the very adaptability that has allowed them to colonize all corners of the earth made them very forgiving and rewarding in cultivation . . .

In orchid growing there are two guiding principles that underlie all else. If you memorize and practice them your success rate will rise exponentially as the months and years pass. First the most important thing you can do is buy sensibly: purchase plants that suit your growing conditions. If you live in a tropical climate, then buy warm-growing plants rather than alpine or cloud-forest plants. Within certain limits and without breaking your budget you can alter the conditions of your growing area to suit the plants, such as by allowing more ventilation, raising the humidity, increasing light intensity or shading. As much as possible try to duplicate the natural growing conditions of the species or, in the case of hybrids, those species in the background of the hybrid . . .

The second principle in orchid growing applies when your plants are already in place in your home or glasshouse and you are responsible for their welfare. Some experienced growers argue that orchids thrive on benign neglect. On the other hand, novices are prone to love their plants to death by overwatering. The Golden Mean between these two extremes is to observe. Inspect your plants regularly, not only for the first symptoms of leaf-spotting fungi or the footprints of a scale insect, but for signs of improper culture--yellowing or loss of leaves, failure to flower, gradual decline.

I actually purchased TWO copies this book is SO useful!

Many orchid growers prefer working with species rather than man-made hybrids. For those growers, this book is invaluable. I actually have two copies: one at work to aid in discussions with co-workers who also grow orchids and one at home. A majority of the species mentioned are also pictured in fabulous photos. This book does not pretend to be all inclusive, but the most common species of the genera listed are included. That's certainly enough for me. If I become interested in a large genus (like Dendrobium), there are Dendrobium monographs available to fill that need.

Colleen M. Conway is Associate Professor of Music Education at the University of Michigan. She edited Great Beginnings for Music Teachers: Mentoring and Supporting New Teachers (2003) and coauthored the Handbook for the Beginning Music Teacher (2006).
Thomas M. Hodgman is Associate Professor of Music and Chair of the Music Department at Adrian College. He coauthored the Handbook for the Beginning Music Teacher (2006).

Poorly written, poorly edited

The writing in this text is often redundant, too verbose and poorly edited. There are several typographical errors and it just doesn't need to be as long as it is. It's funny that the book is called "Teaching Music in HIGHER EDUCATION" because it seems like more often than not the authors recommend treating students like children. Unless you are required to buy this text for a class I would stay away. Even if you are required to buy this text for a class, try to just borrow it from the library if your institution has it on reserve.
