After failing to obtain the obligatory release papers, the patient resigns himself to his fate as a permanent hospital resident. Except for the ending, this plot may strike a familiar chord to anyone who's ever had an extended hospital stay. In Shua's hands, however, it becomes a compelling political allegory in the tradition of Solzhenitsyn's Cancer Ward, though not so bleak. Shua, a popular, prolific author in her native Argentina, brilliantly exposes bureaucratic inefficiency and impersonality, and Argentine-literature specialist Foster has successfully rendered the black humor and satire of the work, though the pun of the Spanish original (I am patient as well as I am a patient) is lost. When a stress test in a hospital consists of scraping the old paint off the floor of the director's office, you might guess you are in an unusual hospital. Shua's mentally confused narrator-protagonist, however, is concentrating on more important things. He has his best photo of himself in his wallet so he can practice the correct expression. He likes visitors, but the most frequent one, his attractive cousin Pochi, is there primarily because she is having an affair with one of the doctors. The narrator enjoys the privilege of a private room, but he started out in the men's ward, Shua's picture of which is a masterful depiction of crowded-in beds, interminable card games, bad odors, and the best part--the song of welcome the patients all sing whenever a newcomer arrives. The narrator's thoughts about himself, the doctors, and the staff and his unquestioning acceptance of such things as having the bed from his apartment in the bathtub of his hospital room further demonstrate Shua's acute perceptiveness. Health care horrors

"Patient," by the Argentine writer Ana Maria Shua, is a surreal novel in which an unnamed first-person narrator checks into an unnamed hospital. He finds himself entangled in an authoritarian, bureaucratic nightmare. The novel has been translated into a stark English by David William Foster.
The novel's creepy, sometimes gruesome touches are oddly complemented by a current of ironic humor. Overall, the novel is strikingly similar in theme and tone to "Bedside Manners," by Luisa Valenzuela (another talented Argentine writer). If you're in the mood for a Kafkaesque satire, give "Patient" a read.

Guy has a slight problem and goes to hospital and can't get out. Being the wife of a doctor myself I really enjoyed this book but it had me thinking, too..

"Cowboy Ethics: What It Takes To Win at Life" A book that can be judged by its cover.

When paging through the book it is easy to get lost in the rugged beauty of the photography. The ideas that are presented in the book explain what makes the men and women who choose the life on the range do so. The buildup in the early pages of the text describe the lifestyle and behavioral standards integral to it. These are no nonsense people. Living a simple life, working hard, living in less than ideal conditions but knowing that their companions have the same standards and expectations. They can be counted on when things get tough. The middle of the book has a page with the "Code of the West", Ten simply expressed points that sum up what is expected of everyone on the range. The last half of the book provides a page or two that explain what is expected of someone who lives by the "Code of the West". Examples of the points of the code used in the explanations come from Classic and recent Western Movies. A colleague who owns a ranch in South Dakota read a couple of pages and noted that this is how her neighbors are. People actually live this way. I ordered the other books from Owen and plan to take a Cowboy Ethics course this summer.

The story continues following a small group of soldiers as they attempt to continue day to day in the most brutal and desperate of situations. The hope of rescue or potential victory is sustained only by camaraderie and the determination to survive.

As the German High Command desperately tries to re-establish the initiative and plan a relief effort to the beleaguered city, the army inside Stalingrad is ordered to stand firm on the banks of the freezing Volga River.

The German Air Force, the Luftwaffe, mistakenly commit to supplying the city from the air, failing to realistically consider the distance, roaming Russian fighters, ground to air fire and the extreme temperatures.

As temperatures plummet and ammunition becomes rationed, the food and combustible material begin to run out forcing the desperate defenders to continue fighting in the most miserable and chilling conditions imaginable to man.

With temperatures dropping to between minus 25 and 40 degrees Celsius, survival against a Red Army hell-bent on revenge and the Sixth Army's destruction will continue as the men face a sustained challenge of survival on a day to day basis.

Across the frozen Russian Front from the suburbs of Leningrad in the north to the southern banks of the Black Sea in the Caucasus Mountains, two facts are now emerging.......this merciless war will now not be over by Christmas, and the myth of German military invincibility had been cracked, if not finally shattered on the banks of the Volga.

Having spent thirty years studying World War 2 and in particular, the Russian Front, Bloody Rattenkrieg is based on historical fact. The characters are fictitious, attempting to portray a realistic account of what the battle would have been like for individual soldiers. All units and actions are in accordance with actual events, including propaganda, deployment and individual division engagements.

There is no glory in war.

Real war from a soldiers perspective. These men were not Nazis, just German regulars fighting for survival in a place where no prisoners were taken. Our Russian allies were capable of extreme atrocities, not only against the hated Germans but civilians as well as their own men. A gripping and enlightening read.
