an effectively claustrophobic work

My Petition for More Space is a quiet book that effectively conveys the results of overpopulation. Hersey's greatest accomplishment in this work is the amazing creation of a claustrophobic world in which people literally cannot get away from one another. With simple, strong language, Hersey portrays this world and its suffocating influence on everyone, as seen through the eyes of the troubled yet insightful narrator. For a novel that does not feature much action, Petition packs a lot of tension and drama. My chief complaint: the ending, though darkly witty, is a bit weak. Overall, this is a short, enjoyably taut work.

Waiting in lines

The story takes place during the course of a day where the protagonist is standing in line to present a petition (for more space, naturally). The line is blocks long and four columns wide, and people are so tightly packed that one cannot turn and can see only the persons on either side (and the backs of the heads of those in front). The book chronicles this person's interactions with the people around him. The presentation of the petition is almost secondary to the relationships formed in line. It is not a great book but it is a quick read with some interesting insights into increasingly superficial relationships formed with neighbors of circumstance.

Grade 9 Up-Thomas Fairbairn is Clan: one of a group of young men who dress in black, don't talk to outsiders, or participate in school. Flaunting Clan rules, Thomas seeks knowledge outside of his group and transfers into the honors program. Casey Willardson, an A student, is enlisted as his tutor and steps out of the security of her suburban in-crowd to help him. Both teens become renegades in the eyes of their peers; group conflict erupts as their friendship grows beyond books. Unfortunately, females are only seen as sex objects in the all-male Clan and Thomas's failure to consummate his relationship with Casey leads in part to his expulsion from the group. Casey's own beliefs are strained as Thomas challenges society and learns the costs of conformity. Reminiscent of The Outsiders and West Side Story, Randle's novel is compelling reading. Romance, gang in-fighting, and high school classroom and social scenes are realistically detailed. Predictably, the final fight between jocks and Clan occurs under the freeway bridge. Nevertheless, powerful writing and a suspenseful, action-driven story will grab teen readers.

I don't give a lot of 5-star reviews. One of my beta-readers recommended that I read Kristen D. Randle, and am I ever glad that she did. Breaking Rank was a great read, intense, engaging, and I definitely want to read more by Ms. Randle.

Another Randle Hit!

I am always hesitant to begin a new Kristen D. Randle story because once I begin, the end is coming and her characters are so compelling that I have separation issues after the story is over. In this story, Breaking Rank,Breaking Rank 2 young adults confront who they are and who they want to be and then discover a way to navigate the passage between those two places...not without hardships. A book full of dreams and reality checks.

This is a moderate-quality book, the photograph/printing is medium-resolution, and the book is short.
$30-50 would be appropriate price for this book.
If you are looking for a definitive atlas, look elsewhere but I do expect this will be useful to most primary care providers.

Enjoyable read, value, knowledge presented in a manner that is easy to digest.

I've read 3 technical recruiting books so far. This one was my favorite. The author has an easy style to comprehend and the book is in fact a pleasure to read. As a technical recruiter myself that focuses on recruiting software engineers in the San Francisco Bay Area, I've found this book gave me enough detail to give me a solid foundation with the technology to have the ability to converse intelligently with the different engineers I speak with on a daily basis.

For what the book contains, and the style it's written in, I have given it 5 stars. I would however, like to see additional sections that would explore some of the more recent booms in the business. I would like to see a whole section on "Cloud Computing" as well as sections on "Big Data", "Search", "Mobile", and "Gaming". Some of these are touched upon, but an expansion in these areas would make this book not only just better than it's competitors, which it already is, but make it light years ahead.

Solid and a Little Less than Spectacular

This book provides excellent foundation recruiting/IT knowledge good for a novice in the field. The language is clear, concise, and occasionally humorous with excellent anecdotes to drive points home. If I had a criticism, it would be that much of the "how to" execution on day to day recruiting was missing. The book seems to be targeted at current recruiters needing to obtain more IT background. Overall, solid; if a little less than spectacular read.

The book is fun to read, content explanation is easy to understand and remember due to the flow of information and related stories. Very thoughtfully written (always keeping the recruiter and their role in mind) . With pictorial presentations to describe complex IT concepts and anecdotes and stories to better understand the logic, this book is a must read for anyone who desires to improve their understanding of IT in general. A big thank you to the author for this book. "You’ve made learning fun"!

David Emory Shi is a professor of history and the president emeritus of Furman University. He is the author of several books on American cultural history, including the award-winning The Simple Life: Plain Living and High Thinking in American Culture and Facing Facts: Realism in American Thought and Culture, 1850–1920.

Holly Mayer is associate professor of history, Chair of the History Department, and Director of the Historical Studies Graduate Program at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Holly’s Ph.D. is from the College of William and Mary. Her research field is late eighteenth-century America, and she is especially interested in civil-military relations during the War for Independence and the evolution of American character and culture. Her monograph , Belonging to the Army: Camp Followers and Community during the American Revolution (1996) is a path-breaking study of the Continental Army as a community.

I really like this book! I am a history major at Portland State University and have found this book (and the second one) very useful. It has a lot of important documents that pertain to each period of history in the United States (and a little bit before the founding of). I would suggest this to any teacher that wants to use ACTUAL writings from a specific period in US history. Also, I would recommend these two books, volume one and two, to anybody that is planning on doing a history research paper. These books will not only help you understand other issue(s)/people to research, but also give you a deep perspective of said time period. There is nothing that professors like more than a student who uses facts from the time period! Very well done! An absolute life saver!!!

Giant Step

This is an invaluable book for all therapists. Epstein does a masterful job of connecting analytic thought with Buddhist teachings. He apparently speaks from experience when he discusses the difficulties we all encounter along our paths. Then he goes a step further and shows how these insights can help direct the therapeutic encounter. This is a genuine, sincere, honest expression from the heart. I am very grateful.

Highly illuminating

I highly recommend this book for those who question the borderland between spirituality and psychotherapy. As a growth oriented psychotherapist, I have an ongoing curiosity about what defines psychotherapy as different from spiritual growth and realization. This book provides some key understandings of the correlations between buddhist practices and how they can be understood from a psychoanalytical perspective. Both camps benefit from this kind of intelligent communication between the two disciplines. I especially appreciated how concentration meditation can mislead a person into thinking they have "arrived" as they access a symbiotic experience, and not realize the further development of consciousness through the separation/individuation process, which unfolds out of this initial merged experience.

A backlog of academic articles

I'd really hoped that Epstein's latest book would be similar to his other books, but unfortunately it isn't. It's a book written more for therapists than for people in general and features previously published academic articles. While the prose isn't too terribly hard to read or filled with academic jargon, it's clear that the intended audience probably has a deeper schooling in therapy than the average reader would.

It's an interesting perspective on Epstein's psychotherapeutic history and how his perspective has changed, but if you're looking for something, I'd recommend reading his earlier books instead.
