A topical tale of one teen's addiction to the Cyber World - and the Northern adventure that saved his life.

Fourteen-year-old Indio McCracken enjoys meteoric stardom as a guitar prodigy after his father posts a video of him playing. Things quickly go sour when Indio's fame fuels his father's dream of raising the world's next Segovia. Robbed of a normal childhood and already feeling alienated by his mixed Guatemalan-Canadian heritage, Indio desperately seeks escape online by creating a virtual identity, an obsession that almost kills him. Facing school expulsion ? or worse ? unless he kicks his Internet habit, Indio is shipped off to a teen addictions rehab center in the wilds of northern Canada where the adventure of a lifetime awaits him.

We all depend on computers, smartphones, or other handheld devices for sharing information, keeping in touch, and entertaining ourselves. But what happens when our normal interaction with these useful tools crosses the line into addiction?

Award-winning author Jamie Bastedo explores the roots of one "screenager's" passions and pitfalls in this timely tale of oppression, addiction, and deliverance.

From School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up—Indio McCracken is half Canadian and half Mayan and lives in Guatemala with his Scottish father, Native mother, and red-headed sister. From the outside, it seems as though Indio's life is pretty great. He is lauded as a classical guitar prodigy who, through a video uploaded by his father, becomes an overnight online sensation. However, behind closed doors, the life Indio leads is one of isolation and loneliness; he is a prisoner to his father in the practice space that has been created for him. Unlike his followers and peers, Indio is not awarded the same freedoms of online internet access. Soon, Indio's dream does come true, and he is given the freedom to attend school, where he endlessly blogs about his life and his guitar. Indio quickly becomes addicted to his new online presence, but then his family is forced to move to Canada, away from the life they knew and from his newfound freedom. Indio is distraught and stops playing his guitar and becomes increasingly depressed. When his mother gives him a new iPhone, Indio falls back into his online addiction. Bastedo shows readers how easy it can be to fall into the world of cyber addiction and how difficult it is to draw the line between the real and virtual worlds—without sounding preachy. Overall, the primary and secondary characters are multifaceted and teens will easily connect with Indio. VERDICT A smartly written title about the dangers of cyber addiction.—Caitlin Wilson, Brooklyn Public Library

My Life in France, by Julia Child, Alex Prud'homme

Julia Child singlehandedly created a new approach to American cuisine with her cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking and her television show The French Chef, but as she reveals in this bestselling memoir, she was not always a master chef. Indeed, when she first arrived in France in 1948 with her husband, Paul, who was to work for the USIS, she spoke no French and knew nothing about the country itself. But as she dove into French culture, buying food at local markets and taking classes at the Cordon Bleu, her life changed forever with her newfound passion for cooking and teaching. Julia’s unforgettable story – struggles with the head of the Cordon Bleu, rejections from publishers to whom she sent her now-famous cookbook, a wonderful, nearly fifty-year long marriage that took them across the globe – unfolds with the spirit so key to her success as a chef and a writer, brilliantly capturing one of the most endearing American personalities of the last fifty years.

Book Description

Julia Child single handedly awakened America to the pleasures of good cooking with her cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking and her television show The French Chef, but as she reveals in this bestselling memoir, she didn't know the first thing about cooking when she landed in France.

Indeed, when she first arrived in 1948 with her husband, Paul, she spoke no French and knew nothing about the country itself. But as she dove into French culture, buying food at local markets and taking classes at the Cordon Bleu, her life changed forever. Julia's unforgettable story unfolds with the spirit so key to her success as a cook and teacher and writer, brilliantly capturing one of the most endearing American personalities of the last fifty years.

Julie & Julia is now a major motion picture (releasing in August 2009) starring Meryl Streep as Julia Child. It is partially based on her memoir, My Life in France. Enjoy these images from the film, and click the thumbnails to see larger images.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. With Julia Child's death in 2004 at age 91, her grandnephew Prud'homme (The Cell Game) completed this playful memoir of the famous chef's first, formative sojourn in France with her new husband, Paul Child, in 1949. The couple met during WWII in Ceylon, working for the OSS, and soon after moved to Paris, where Paul worked for the U.S. Information Service. Child describes herself as a "rather loud and unserious Californian," 36, six-foot-two and without a word of French, while Paul was 10 years older, an urbane, well-traveled Bostonian. Startled to find the French amenable and the food delicious, Child enrolled at the Cordon Bleu and toiled with increasing zeal under the rigorous tutelage of minence grise Chef Bugnard. "Jackdaw Julie," as Paul called her, collected every manner of culinary tool and perfected the recipes in her little kitchen on rue de l'Universit ("Roo de Loo"). She went on to start an informal school with sister gourmandes Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle, who were already at work on a French cookbook for American readers, although it took Child's know-how to transform the tome—after nine years, many title changes and three publishers—into the bestselling Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961). This is a valuable record of gorgeous meals in bygone Parisian restaurants, and the secret arts of a culinary genius. Photos. First serial in the New York Times Magazine and Bon Apptit. (Apr.)

From Bookmarks Magazine
More than four decades ago, Julia Child first brought her joie de vivre—and classic recipes—to American kitchens with cookbooks that included Mastering the Art of French Cooking (1961) and a handful of immensely popular cooking shows, beginning in 1963 with the decade-long run of The French Chef. In My Life in France, an engaging, nuanced addition to the body of her work, Child was assisted by great-nephew Alex Prud'homme, who allowed Child's distinctive voice to ring throughout. Child herself worked diligently on the manuscript during the last year of her life. The result is a memoir that brings to life the jocular, grandmotherly guide who introduced so many Americans to the joy of peerless meals conceived and prepared with lan and rich imagination.

Do yourself a favor and read this
By D
May I suggest reading this book before any other of her masterful works. The recounting of the birth of her Art of French Cooking in two volumes is chronicled here as well as her introduction to France, French and their cuisine . Her marriage to Paul is an exceptionally sweet bonding, and the few paragraphs about Paul that are in the conclusion are in both exquisite taste and heart holding.
It's a 'pick up and read where it falls open' sort of book. It could be considered a first chapter to her other books, a must read.

Interesting insight, ok writing
By Amazon Customer
For those who remember Julia, this book gives insight into how she ended up on our televisions and in our kitchens. She was a truly delightful and amazing woman. While I did enjoy the book, for me, it felt a bit too much like a diary. It helps to understand that this book wasn't actually written by Julia, but by her nephew Alex Prud'Homme as a way to capture a story that she was always wanting to write but never got around to it. And no wonder! Julia was such a busy woman, full of a yearning for knowledge and probably as well versed in French cooking and how it works as any fantastic French cook classically trained in France, or more! It is fortunate for me that I don't read in "voices," though. When I told my boyfriend what I was reading, he automatically indicated that it would probably drive him nuts to have her very distinctive voice in his head while he read it. And I can understand that, particularly given that the book is not tiny. This book is definitely worth a read, but be warned that it is not a story, but rather a train of thought, that carries you through Julia's discovery of her beloved France and her amazing understanding of French food.

I just finished reading this book for a travel writing class. Rich in historical details and perspective, this book tells the story of French cuisine from the perspective of a lifelong admirer and devotee, one Julia Child. Without diminishing quality of a good story with superfluous personal detail, Child and her grandson Alex Prud'Homme guide us through the life of Julia Child from her first meal in France to her last in Provence. Without spoiling a great read for you, as the French waiters say before a delicious meal, bon apptit!
