5th grade math from multiple approaches

Parents with an undergrad degree in math might be confused by the multiple approaches of enVisionMATH� Common Core for grade 5, but they should be able to help their child with most of the problems in the text. It is recommended that the parents and students review their addition, subtraction, multiplication and division skills, keep a calculator handy, review number line guidelines, learn to use a matrix and practice estimating. Be open to new math terms such as “repeated addition”, instead of multiplication, or “compatible numbers” as used in estimating.

Parents should also de-emphasize problems presented in the text that are not relevant to the concepts in the current section, such as the Geometry question in section 3-2 on page 67 (Similar-looking figures are subsequently defined on page 308, or Section 12-1. It was also noted that the page 67 problem did not give dimensions, so it can’t be determined whether the sides are parallelograms, as required by the definition on page 308.) Other off-topic questions include question number 26 on page 35 and questions 18 – 20 on page 205. Another example is how Topic 3 uses expressions that are typically introduced with Algebra, then 130 pages later, in Topic 8-1, the term Algebraic Expression is actually defined. In addition, parents should realize there are typos, such as the example on page xxii of the “Problem-Solving Handbook” section, which should read 13 rows of 4 ones, not “13 rows of 4 once”. This sample question in the “Problem Solving Handbook” section is meaningless, unless the typo is caught and corrected.

Students and Parents should be careful of some of the definitions, such as “compatible numbers” which appears on page 31 and is changed slightly for questions 23 – 34 on page 94. In short, a good math teacher will probably be able to skip around the text to present topics in a more logical order and parents can help if they master a few new or uncommon math terms.

Part of the confusion with enVisionMATH� comes from the way the authors seem to use one approach for a while then shift to a different approach. In the first half of the text there are over 2,400 problems for the students. At least five different approaches are used. The most confusing approach is the estimating which comprises over 20% of the problems. Other approaches that are used involve “mental math” or working out the answer with pencil and paper (50% of the problems), approximately 3% of the problems direct the student to use a calculator, for approximately 12% of the problems the student is requested to use a model, or a matrix or a number line. Other methods, such as definitions or comparison make up over 15% of the problems.

enVisionMATH� stresses a lot of estimating. While estimating is a worthwhile skill, there are challenges. One of the challenges is students can estimate a number of different answers to the same problem. In addition, to determine the best estimate the student might need to determine all close estimates then determine the exact answer, then construct a number line. For example, question #10 of Topic 4-5 asks the student to “use compatible numbers to estimate each quotient” for 289/3. (The text promotes the theory that a compatible number should make the solution easier to estimate.) In the referenced problem, it doesn’t look like any number could be substituted for 3 that would make the problem easier, but the 289 could be changed to 270 or 300 or 288 or 291 and the remainder would be eliminated, which might be considered easier. The referenced section of the text asks only for an “estimate of the quotient” so it appears that 90, 96, 97 and 100 each answer what was asked. Other similar sections of the text ask for the best estimate. For the 289/3 problem the student would have to graph the estimates and the actual answer on a number line or do a comparison analysis of the differences between the actual answer and each estimate.

It seems likely that most students will be able to navigate their way through the confusion, if not on their first try then there are good odds they will master it when they repeat fifth grade math once or twice. A teacher who loves math could provide some clarity and at least one parent who is willing to work ahead would be a big help.

In conclusion, if enVisionMATH� Common Core for grade 5 is the initial effort of the 13 scholars listed in the forward, then the text deserves a single star for creativity and 4/10 of a star for attempting to cover the subject from so many different directions. To total the stars for the Amazon website ranking, a numberline was constructed, a matrix was built, a calculator was consulted, a search was made for a compatible number, place-value blocks were considered and in the end the estimated 1.4 stars were rounded to 1 star.

If you want to improve your program, buy this book. If you want to get organized, buy this book. It is the product of years of experience compiled by Eddie. He gave us this info in our education classes at U of H in the form of copious notes and I modified it for orchestra. it worked like a charm!

Sure, many of us in this modern world are cynical. The most cynical may even suspect that the news is manipulated and massaged by sponsors, that corporations act in their best interests, that political campaigns are determined not by votes, but by bucks, and that we don't get "all the news that's fit to print" but instead, "all the news that gets the ink". But even the most media-savvy amongst you will be awed by the behind-the-scenes descriptions of the Public Relations industry in action so masterfully described in this book. If you want your eyes to be opened, open them upon the pages of this book. Stauber and Rampton cite a classic example of image manipulation in this chilling analysis of the PR business. During the aftermath of the 1975 Three-Mile Island nuclear accident, a company spokesman said that a spark in the accumulated hydrogen bubble could result in a "spontaneous energetic disassembly"?otherwise known as an explosion. The authors trace certain specious practices of the $10 billion PR business to P.T. Barnum, who in 1836 wrote anonymous pro and con letters to editors about himself, generating heated interest. Modern public relations has evolved "crisis management" and "anti-" PR campaigns including sabotaging the tours of authors who challenge industry clients, for example, Jeremy Rifkin, author of Beyond Beef. The new euphemism for sewage sludge, "biosolids," is part of a campaign to convince the public that municipal sludge, replete with an astounding array of toxic substances, is good for farm soil. The authors point to Business for Social Responsibility, an organization that includes The Body Shop, Ben & Jerry's and others, as now containing "some of the most environmentally destructive corporations on the planet." Giant agencies extend their contracts to selling national policies, as Hill & Knowlton did in selling the Gulf war to the American public. Although most large news organizations at least rewrite PR materials, many smaller markets "rip and read" prepackaged video news releases. This is a cautionary reminder that much of the consumer and political world is created by for-hire mouthpieces in expensive neckties.

Want to know what is really going on behind closed ...

Want to know what is really going on behind closed doors? Want to know the ways in which the PR industry manipulates and lies to the public? Want to know who to trust? (Hint: Almost no one). This book really opened my eyes to the fact that we are manipulated by media from the moment we wake up until the moment we close our eyes at night. This was required reading for my Ethics in PR class in college. The book is somewhat dated, with most of the incidents taking place prior to the internet, but don't be fooled by online content either. The internet has only made it easier for the common person to be duped by big business.

Over two hundred and ten pages of tantalizing and juicy behind-the-scenes info that most of the general public is either ignorant about or could care less. This book is broken down into twelve seperate chapters; each chapter covers an important area of PR manipulation. The chapters are as follows:

While reading this book, I really get the impression that the PR specialist are "artist" in their own way. Using the art of subtle manipulation and various other sneaky methods, these "story-tellers" are painting a picture of reality that puts the most positive light on some crummy issue, or corporate entity. While I always hear someone say 'you can't always believe what you see or read', I can't help but wonder if these people really understand the extent of their spoken words. This book will help shed some light.

Its amazing how someone can write a book on cultivation of marijuana and not know anything about it.
At the time Tommy wrote this book he had no idea that a marijuana clone cloned from a female would become a female, a very valuable reason for cloning. Reading his section on cloning, you can see he has little experience with cloning and frankly dosent know what hes talking about, and sort of makes things up as he goes along. Here is a phrase directly from his book... "The downside is that in most cases with most growers, most clones die before they grow roots and become new plants. I've tried using rooting compounds, not using them, different soil combinations, etcetera. My personal success rate with clones runs about 7 percent, so if I start twenty clones, it's with the expectation that only one or two will survive, and if I'm lucky one of those will be female." pg. 131 This is one of many things written in this book that are bunk.
Tommy if you ever get a chance to read this, please dont compare yourself with most growers because my success rate for cloning is closer to 90%(sometimes even 100%) and, oh yeah! theyre all females, because I clone from female plants.

don't waste you time. i thumbed through this book at the mall. He says it's perfectly fine to microwave or bake you buds to dry then. I would love to meet the idiot who actually did this and thought they had a quality product. what a joke. this book is dangerous for newbies.

Please don't use this book to learn!

I picked this book up the other day at the mall just thinking a little extra reading in my collection wouldn't hurt. This is my third book on growing I've bought so far and it is by far the worst book ever written on growing. You would seriously have better luck just winging it than actually taking this guy's advice. His advice for quick drying buds is to put them in a plastic bag and stomp around on them for a while. He also suggests to use Miracle Gro which retains water like crazy. I'm not sure why this guy wrote this book, maybe it was supposed to be a joke, but please do not take it seriously. It reads like one of those old Zoo Books you would use to write essays on polar bears in elementary school. Quite pathetic.
