Thorung La and Back on a Dime

If you don't have a few thousand dollars to fly to Nepal and hike the Annapurna Circuit, but you do have $4.00 and a phone, then congrats, Tristan Higbee has just saved you a huge bundle of cash. Like his other excellent trekking narrative Himalayan Pilgrim: A Chronicle of Independent Trekking Through Nepal's Less-Traveled Regions, Annapurna Pilgrim does an incredible job of transporting you from wherever you are and plopping you down in the heart of the Himalayas. I am genuinely not kidding when I say reading this book feels like going on your own little trek through the eyes of someone with an open mind, a glib sense of humor, and the time to explore the furthest reaches of the mountain region. Whether you're trudging over dusty jeep roads, wriggling your fingers for warmth in the blustery morning on Thorung La, or watching the rhododendrons burst like fireworks as you make your way through a tropical canyon, I can promise you that you will a) be surprised at how hard it is to put this book down and b) you will get a sense of adventure and fulfillment as you accompany the author on his journey. If that's not worth your time then what book is?

Wonderful Adventure in Nepal in Winter!

This book is a well-written book about trekking around Annapurna in Nepal in the winter. There are some great pictures along with the lively and informative text. This book should appeal to those adventurers who are thinking of trekking here (lots of details as to cost, equipment, etc.), as well as to us arm chair adventurers who just like to read about other people's adventures. This is the third book Tristan has written about trekking in Nepal and I highly recommend all of them. Tristan is a very good writer and makes the subject come alive. At the end of the book there is a link to many more pictures on his blog, which are well worth viewing.

About the Author
Barbara Weiden Boyd is Henry Winkley Professor of Latin and Greek at Bowdoin College, where she teaches courses in Greek and Latin languages and literatures, classical mythology, the city of Rome, Ovid s influence and reception, epic poetry, and other classical topics. She received her PhD in Classical Studies from the University of Michigan, and is the author or editor of several scholarly books and numerous articles on Latin literature, especially the poetry of Vergil and Ovid.

This is the perfect text for AP Latin in high school or for any college course! Containing all the passages relevant to the new AP Exam and a great deal more besides, this is the most user-friendly Virgil text on the market. Boyd gives clear definitions of obscure words and explains difficult passages, provides a foldout vocabulary list of the epic's most high-frequency words, and explains the references in the text which, while understood by Virgil's original audience, are often obscure today. This text allows the student to actually read and enjoy the Aeneid (arguably the greatest epic poem of antiquity...apologies to Homer who is Virgil's only rival) without constantly resorting to a dictionary or an index of proper names. I will be using this text with my upcoming AP Latin class. It is no small thing to create a text as well suited as this one to the needs of students who can learn to appreciate the inestimable beauty of Virgil. I also highly recommend the teacher's guide for its excellent literal translation and questions for in-class discussion. The growing number of schools dedicated to the Classical curriculum, and any institution offering Latin, will find in this text a welcome ally in making Virgil accessible in our time. Macte!

Geoff Martz attended Dartmouth College and Columbia University, joining The Princeton Review in 1985 as a teacher and writer. Martz headed the development team that designed the Review's GMAT course. Who said studying can't be fun?

The reason I bought this book is really for my husband. He was "distracted" in high school. We've been doing very good without his H.S. diploma but I wanted him to at least take the GED. I picked this one, first, beacause of it's title. It wasn't so "formal" like the other ones. This actually sounded pretty "casual." Secondly, because of the Princeton GED tests they have in the back. That really helped us a lot (I'm his "tutor":)). Lastly, and the best reason to buy this book is that it's funny. What I mean by that is that they don't try to bore the life out of you. They teach you really helpful things but they word it in ways that the subject keeps your attention. My husband was never the "school" type but amazingly he reads Craking the GED voluntarily and he TESTS himself!!!I even catch him smiling to himself while studying sometimes! In conclusion, if you want to get the GED over with but don't want to hire someone to hold your eyes open...Buy the book.It's GREAT! It's PERFECT for teenagers also.

Great study aid!

I really liked this book. The writers wrote in a way that was interesting and easy to understand. They were able to catch and keep my attention which was surpising, but I also agreed with the other reviewer when he/she said that there should have been more detailed explanations. For example, in the math section there are a lot helpful practice problems which I liked, except when I turned to the back of the book to check my answers and I got one or two incorrect, it told me the right answer, but didn't really explain why that was the right answer. So, since I had no idea how they got that answer I had no idea how to fix the mistake I made doing the problem. Still, besides that one drawback, in my opinion the book was great. Before I applied to do my GED I came to this site and read about all the study guides available . This book definately got the best reviews .I went to the libarary and found only the Arco test books which were ok but when I bought this book it just made everything easier and less complicated.It explained things in great detail and best of all it told you the things that are most likely to come up in the test.When I went to do my exams I found the book very acurate in its predictions. I am glad to say that I passed with pretty good scores .So to all those who come after me good luck and get the book it is definately worth it.

i LOVE this book!!!!!

I'm 5'10". In the first of February (2013) I weighed 234 lbs and I needed to change so I did something drastic. I quit drinking all soft drinks and all fruit juice cold turkey. My doctor had already warned me about artificial sweeteners.
In just over two months I had lost 20 pounds, so I decided to tell my husband what I had been doing. As much as I love him this guy didn't notice when I donated my hair to Locks of Love. The first thing he did was buy a big bag of my favorite candy bar and leave it on the kitchen table.
I had hoped he would join me.
On June 7, 2013 I had a check-out and official weigh in. I'm down to 198! Do you know how many years it's been since I've weighed 198?
But then something even better happened: I FOUND THIS BOOK!!!
I said I gave up juice, but I didn't give up fruit because I knew I'd need the fiber. This book said I was right, but it also said I was wrong about a lot of things. Because I live in a small town I may not be able to find everything it recommends, so I've started a shopping list for our next trip to Nashville, or maybe Evansville.
And I have a further disadvantage because I hate oatmeal. I love Cream of Wheat, but that doesn't fit the guidelines; it cooks too quickly. You'll have to read the book to understand what that means.
I love the idea of mandatory snacks, sample menus; as a matter of fact I can't find anything NOT to like.
The weight I shed was based solely on changing my diet. The first twenty pounds were the quickest. I know I'm in for a battle if I want to lose another twenty. And I do.
This isn't just a book to me. It's a weapon in my arsenal and I will use it as such. It's already given me more confidence than I had before.
I'm taking swimming aerobics now!! I'm in a smaller suit and could be in an even smaller one before the summer's over.

Life Changing! The Results are Amazing!

My husband has struggled with weight loss for many years and has needed to lose over 100 pounds. He has tried dozens of different diet books, and has always ultimately failed as the plans were too restrictive, too extreme, and not sustainable in the long term, not to mention impossible for the whole family to eat together. Rachel's book has truly been a life changer. My husband has lost over 80 pounds following the advice in Rachel Beller's book. My husband was diabetic and the medication that he was taking was no longer effective, and he was told that he would need insulin. He had had high blood pressure and out of control cholesterol despite prescription medications. Today, he is off all of prescription medications and has a clean bill of health. He gave the book to his sister, who has now lost over 70 pounds, and his mother who is in her seventies and she has lost 30 pounds that she has struggled to lose for over a decade. Even though, I do not struggle with my weight, it has transformed how I eat and I fell so much better. I can not recommend this book more strongly. It contains all the advice and guidance that make it easy to eat healthier, and be healthier from the day you start reading. Thank you Rachel!

Light from Many Lamps

In this book you will find the wisdom of people like Burroughs, Longfellow, Emerson and Shakespeare, to name only a few. I found this a very comforting book to read in times of difficulty. It was a gift from a friend when I was young. Now that I am old, I find it a great gift for teens and adults, and recently bought two to give to friends. My book is very well used and falls open to my favored pages. I heartily recommend this book.

This Book Belongs...

on the bedside tables of every person. When I first read it, I was feeling pretty down but found my spirits lifting with every turn of a page. Especially helpful are the chapters about Harold Russell who lost the use of his hands, but gained in strength and fortitude and Mary Pickford who writes so well about the possibilities of beginning again after failure and setback. I could go on giving example after example of the wonderful inspiration that awaits anyone who reads this book. It's the type of book you can read just a few pages from and get just what you need. You can't go wrong buying this book.

I love the stories behind the inspirational poems in this book! For example, learning the story of William Ernest Henley author of the poem "Invictus" makes the poem so much more poignant. The author includes poems addressing courage, happiness, faith, confidence, fear, self-discipline, family, peace of mind and the future. This is a keeper and a wonderful gift.

About the Author

Jason E. Harlacher, PhD, is a researcher, consultant, and adjunct professor with over ten years of education experience. He works full time as a senior researcher at Marzano Research in Centennial, Colorado, and is coauthor of the Practitioner's Guide to Curriculum-Based Evaluation in Reading. Prior to joining Marzano Research, Dr. Harlacher worked as a school psychologist, a Response to Intervention consultant, and the state director for Positive Behavior Support of Nevada. He presents nationally on schoolwide prevention models and has published articles on RTI, social-emotional learning, and classroom interventions for ADHD. Dr. Harlacher earned a bachelor's of arts degree in psychology from Ohio University, a master's degree in school psychology from Utah State University, and a doctorate in school psychology from the University of Oregon.

Knowledge is Power!

My daughter was diagnosed with many different mental disorders before a doctor figured out she had BPD. Then from there was many different and failed medicines that caused more pain than help. Finally when I saw this on Amazon I saw a ray of hope. This workbook is pivotal in changing my daughter's chances of living as normal as one can with BPD. It helps you see why you do what you do, why you want to do what you do and how you can overcome those defining moments. Counseling is expensive and we can't always afford it, but this workbook has opened doors for my daughter and brought a welcomed knowledge. An important tool, along with meds, some counseling and prayer she WILL overcome. Thank you!

I bought this for a friend and she needed support and help so I went through this book with her one on one and together we finished it through about 3/4 of the way. I love how this book lets you write down your own experiences and the problem with borderline personality disorder. For a friend helping a friend, this is a really Great and Helpful Workbook for Yourself, or a friend.
