You know this isn't an ordinary sex guidebook when "A Word of Caution" at the beginning includes, "Some of the positions were accomplished only after years of yogic practice... Please don't get stuck in a position you can't get out of." And indeed, a few of the splendidly illustrated positions demand a degree of strength and flexibility we may find only in our fantasies. Picture a man and women engaged in mutual oral sex, the man sitting back comfortably with legs extended, the woman in a backbend over him, her legs straddling his chest, her arms straddling his thighs, face tucked into his groin. How long could you hold that, if you could get into it in the first place? A few acrobatic positions aside, most of the positions are enticing and, shall we say, accessible.

Talented illustrator Kyle Spencer is the star of this show. Her illustrations reflect four distinctly different artistic styles: realistic drawings of modern lovers, line drawings reminiscent of ancient Asian and Indian erotic art, illustrations from Indian temple sculptures, and classic Japanese erotic art. Unless you read the introduction, you won't guess that such varied illustrations are all by the same artist.

The text is snippets of the history of sexuality through the ages, with biographical notes from the author. Sensual, inviting, humorous and instructive -always fun!

I found this book to be very enjoyable, inviting wonderful conversations with my partner and opportunities to explore more intimately the joy of sex and pleasure while marrying the sense of the sacred in all of it. The illustrations are beautiful and warm; the text humorous, honest and real. I appreciated the diversity of the quotes and illustrations. . . they speak to the allowance of exploring the wide variety of sexual expression. I highly recommend this book.

simple, but fun and visual

I like this book because it has simple drawings with very little text. As well, I like the fact that it has images from around the world through time and cultures. I recommend this book especially for women wanting more easy sexual information. Definitely not a porn book for men- this is done soley for the purpose of positions with a healthy,loving view of sex. Not a lot of new positions for me/us but very fun to view with a partner! The positions are quite do-able if you are in relatively good shape and not a couch potato. This is one of my favorites because of its simplicity and great pictures.

Don't let the editoral review or other reviews fool you. This book is not worth your time. The illustrations attempt to represent real people part of the time, but not always. Much of the genitalia is exaggerated, wrinkled, and very displeasing to the eye. The pictures are actually a huge turn off. My partner and I flipped through this book and found that most of the positions they suggest aren't that creative and the few news ones are only meant for acrobats, I'm sorry but not everyone's bodies can bend in the ways this book wants you to. Additionally, this book isn't very long, only 134 pages and quite a few of those are illustrations depicting artwork in ancient temples and paintings that do not include descriptions. Don't waste your money here, spend your $... on something else!

As is evident from the arrangement of the chapters our point of view was gradually transmuting from geometric to chemical. Moreover, the decision about the compounds that should be discussed was taken only during the course of the work, as is partly evident from the sequence of the references. For chemical or geometrical reason we have included also certain layered chain and molecular structures as well as some layered structures whose layers are linked by hydrogen bonds, thus are in fact three-dimensional. Instead of writing only a review with pseudo-scientific interpretations that later turn out to be wrong anyway we thought it more profitable to include the crystallographic data which are scattered in various original articles and hand books but never in one single volume. We have transcribed many of the data in order to make them correspond with the standard settings of the International Tables for X-Ray Crystallography. The figures are consistent with the data given in the tables. We apologize for errors and hope that their number is at a reasonably low level in spite of the time pressure.

The organization of the chapters in this volume is kaleidoscopic, constantly revolving, like the discussion in this introduction (with apologies to the reader who may, by this point, be feeling rather dizzy from all this talk of revolutions). Part I sets out various bearings on the sixth sense, commencing with the physiological: the discovery of the muscle, vestibular, and temperature senses (all of which would have been news to Aristotle, as Wade points out), and culminates in the mystical: the transcendence of the senses which, on Hollenback's account, shows a certain commonality across both history and cultures. In between these two extremes--the world beneath the five senses and the world beyond them--there are chapters on the sense of direction (Hudson) and perception at a distance (Bleek and Lloyd). The latter piece suggests that touch may not be the proximity sense it is commonly thought to be in the West, since it can act at a distance, too, according to the I Ixam San.
Part II, which is historical in orientation, opens with a chapter that delves into the "invention" of the five senses in the Western tradition (Vinge). This is followed by a chapter on the late eighteenth-century scientific investigation of mesmerism and the fateful discovery of the power of suggestion--fateful because it undermined the authority of the evidence of the senses (which the philosophers and scientists of that period took to be the foundation of all knowledge). This historical episode was a first in multiple ways (Riskin). The next chapter explores the eighteenth-century natural-philosopher-turned Christian-mystic Emmanuel Swedenborg's anatomy of the spiritual senses, and the reception of his revelations in mid-nineteenth-century America. This transplant gave birth to the first New Age movement in America (Schmidt). Subsequent chapters deal with the invention of telepathy and what this owed to telegraphy in the late nineteenth century (Thurschwell); the liberation of intuition and the repositioning of reason in the (second) New Age (Barcan); and, the mediation of the sixth sense in the phantom films of the late twentieth century (Thurschwell).
Part III, "Uncanny Sensations," consists of essays by a maverick biologist (Sheldrake) and a maverick anthropologist (Taussig) who, by virtue of their sense-minded approaches to the study of ESP and magic, respectively, reveal that these phenomena are perhaps not so uncanny as the title of this part implies. Their contributions mark a fundamental break with the conventional (psycho logistic) understanding of perception in the West.
Part IV, which is cross-cultural in orientation, picks up where Part I left off. It begins with Eliade's sensory genealogy of mystical experience. Eliade's comparative and (to his mind) historical survey is followed by a series of case studies, rich in ethnographic detail, of the varieties of extraordinary perception: Myerhoff on how the doors of perception are opened through peyote use among the Huichol; Ladennan on how the altered state of trance is modeled among the Malays; and Straight on how miraculous experience is possible among the Samburu. This part concludes with a chapter by Chidester on how the mass mediation of the senses has enabled shamanism to go global and also provided the medium for some to journey home.
The cultural history--anthropology of the sixth sense is replete with discontinuities, gaps, and restarts. In this respect it resembles the fugitive character of sense experience itself. It might be thought that all the different ideas of the sixth sense canvassed in this book are a testimony to the power of the human imagination, were it not that imagination is (or was, until the late eighteenth century) itself considered a sense, hence part of the perceptual kaleidoscope.
ABCDERIUM of Extra/Sensory Powers
The final section of this Reader consists of an ABCDERIUM of Extra/Sensory Powers. This feature is modeled after the "Abcderius" in Sensoriuro: Embodied Experience, Technology, and Contemporary Art (Jones 2006). An abcderium is "an Enlightenment-era format that uses the stochastic variable of the alphabet to generate categories for thinking. ... " (Jones 2006: 3). In Sensorium, the emphasis is on the generation of categories "for thinking the body through its technological mediations." Where this volume differs from Sensor/um is in the attention it brings to bear on the "techniques of the senses" (Mauss 2007; Howes 2000), which exist before and alongside the technological mediation of perception.
Some readers, glancing over the ABCDERIUM, may see it as little more than "chaos with an index" (Glenn 2005), and to them some further specification is owed. A considered opinion would suggest that speech, proprioception (or kinaesthesia), and ESP all enjoy equal rights to the title of the sixth sense, at least in the Western tradition (and insofar as humans are concerned), while mind would be the prime candidate in the Buddhist tradition. The sense of beauty enjoys the strongest claim to the title of the seventh sense (though humor is rising). There is also the lesser distinction of being considered a sixth sense, a seventh sense, and so forth. It is less clear how this distinction should be distributed among the various candidates. Perhaps what we need is another Thomas Tomkis to write a play in which each and every one of the senses in the ABCDERIUM could play a role, and be judged (but by whom?). Ultimately, however, the real importance of the category of the sixth sense lies not in its promotion of this or that faculty, but in its power to open up the boundaries of conventional perceptual paradigms to new possibilities of perception.

Very Good Introductory Treatment

During the first part of the 20th century, Arthur Pink put pen to paper and produced a number of outstanding books that continue to be held in high esteem among many. Pink is famous for 3 main things. First, he held to a very high Calvinist theology. Second, because of the first, he held some highly controversial positions that many Arminians find repugnant. Third, Pink's ability to soak and bathe his views in Scripture are quite extraordinary. It is not at all uncommon to read entire chapters of Pink and encountering a Scripture verse in every other sentence. Such is the case with this particular book.
This book is very short, less than 100 pages. As a result, those looking for a more exhaustive treatment of this topic a la Charnock (whom Pink eloquently quotes a number of times in this book) or the more recent work by Feinberg might be disappointed. However, I'm giving the book 5 stars because even though one could write for a lifetime about the attributes of God and not cover the topic completely, Pink's short work is nonetheless very meaty and is a solid contribution that a number of more recent authors have rightly drawn from in their works.
As is the usual Pink style, he is unapologetic throughout this book in elevating God's ways far above the ways of man, as he believes Scripture does. He is unapologetic about lamenting the wickedness of man generally, and in many cases, directing his most impassioned criticism towards the modern Church for what he sees as the church's coddling of sin, demotion of God to a pleasant afterthought of the human construct, and failing to preach on the unpopular attributes of God such as His wrath. This is not a book aimed at those who want to hear unthreatening and soft peddling thoughts in an effort to feel better about themselves. On the contrary, this is a book that sternly asks Christians to set themselves aside for a minute and examine God for who He is instead of making Him out to be an elevated form of what we see in the mirror. Pink was frighteningly accurate about the mentality of so many Christians who claim to love and understand God while recasting Him in their own image. Scripture plainly teaches otherwise, and Pink's treatment is solid in this area.
Pink's chapter on the patience of God is very good, and His treatment of the immutability of God is outstanding for those who are grappling with the contemporary open theism controversy. Pink wrote before this controversy got legs, but this book along with some others he wrote are quite devastating to the open theist on the questions of foreknowledge, immutability, and sovereignty.
So this book, while not a massive treatise, is nonetheless a Scripture packed analysis that crams a lot of meat into a small book. Excellent for beginners who want to get exposed to these issues without reading a big hardback treatment, and excellent also for more seasoned theologians since Pink has truly emerged over the years as being one of the finest and most impassioned apologists for Calvinism and a high treatment of God in the last 100 years.

Before you buy this book...

This book is a great help for growing into the knowledge and understanding of our Creator's character, which is crucial for Christians to acquire; for growing spiritually (theocentrically). Easy read, also great for referencing. BUT!! Before you buy this work, instead I would recommend getting A.W. Pink's, The Nature of God (ISBN: 0802465714), which can be purchased here at Amazon.com as well. It has this entire book, plus much more.

The Attributes of God

There is nothing more important than having an accurate knowledge of God. The glory of God has been defined as the sum total of His attributes. As a person comes to know God in increasing measures as He truly exists,they see more of His glory. One of the valuable features in most of the books that Pink has written is that you get numerous quotes from some of the finest works on those subjects that have been written. Mr.Pink quotes from "the" classic,Charnock's "Existence and Attributes of God" no less than ten times. In the preface Pink gives the reader some important directives as to why a book on the attributes of God should be read and how we may profit thereby. He writes,"The foundation of all true knowledge of God must be a clear mental apprehension of His perfections as revealed in Holy Scripture. An unknown God can neither be trusted,served,nor worshipped. ...Something more than a theoretical knowledge of God is needed by us. God is only truly known in the soul as we yield ourselves to Him,submit to His authority,and regulate all the details of our lives by His holy precepts and commandments." Our one great aim in life should be to know God and to worship Him in sprit and in truth. This book exalts the God who is and accurately sets forth His person as He has revealed Himself in His Holy Word. Its eternal value is inestimable in helping someone to come to know better the God of the Bible.

This Present Darkness, by Frank Peretti, is among the classic novels of the Christian thriller genre. First published in 1986, Peretti's book set a suspenseful standard in spiritual warfare story-telling that has rarely been met by his contemporaries. Set in the apparently innocent small town of Ashton, This Present Darkness follows an intrepid born-again Christian preacher and newspaper reporter as they unearth a New Age plot to take over the local community and eventually the entire world. Nearly every page of the book describes sulfur-breathing, black-winged, slobbering demons battling with tall, handsome, angelic warriors on a level of reality that is just beyond the senses. However, Christian believers and New Age demon-worshippers are able to influence unseen clashes between good and evil by the power of prayer. Peretti's violent descriptions of exorcisms are especially vivid: "There were fifteen [demons], packed into Carmen's body like crawling, superimposed maggots, boiling, writhing, a tangle of hideous arms, legs, talons, and heads." This book is not for the squeamish. But for page-turning spiritual suspense, it's hard to beat.

Troubled But Not Too Terrible

I respect any author who has achieved what I have yet to achieve with my writing, so before I give my thoughts on TPD, I just want to put that out there as I have the utmost respect for Frank Peretti and what he has accomplished as a writer. That being said, I really struggled to get through THIS PRESENT DARKNESS. From a storytelling perspective the narrative is far from perfect, and though that's not a big deal as no story is truly told perfectly, this one was filled with cliche Church-speak, straw-man characters, and lacked the gut-wrenching tension that really draws a reader in and keeps them on the edge of their seat. I did, however, love Peretti's depiction of the interaction between the realms, and since this review pertains to the storytelling aspects of TPD ONLY, as a world-builder his system of the supernatural was clear, concise, and believable. I did, however, take issue with the head demons (and their hosts) as Baal-Rafar and some of the others felt more like comic book villains rather than the child-like terrors that make demons truly evil. All-in-all, THIS PRESENT DARKNESS can be enjoyable if you are able to get passed the cheesy dialogue, semi-offensive cliches, and the long wait till the clashing of swords. 3 out 5 stars.

One of my FAVORITE books!

I keep rereading this book every couple of years. It has given me so much more of a spiritual awareness of that battle going on all around us - the battle for our souls.

It also happens to be well-written and grammatically correct. The details help you picture in your mind as well as feel with all your senses what is going on in the story, yet they are not such that they slow the reader down or become boring.

Even knowing the end of the story when I reread it, I still cannot get my eyes to read fast enough to get to a convenient breaking location so that I can go to bed for the night at a reasonable time. (It's a good thing there are chapters that help with that.) Very exciting and constantly setting the reader up for the next twist in the plot....

Frank Peretti is an awesome writer

His books do a really good job painting visual pictures in the mind, and suck you deep into the story. This is one of the best series in my opinion, and definitely worth a read, as are the others in this series. Reminded me how much I enjoyed reading the Narnia series as a kid, as well as the Hobbit and Lord of the Ring series. These are full length novels, so be prepared to invest some time in chapters that set the stage for later events. I got this for my daughter to read (11 yrs. old), whereas I was 35 or something when I read them. I can't tell if she is enjoying it yet, as she reads about 5 books at a time, and I can't seem to get her to invest the time into this one. Might be over her head, or a bit slow to start with the character development, I don't know.

For adults, I highly recommend this book and the series, but for the younger audience, it may be to mature or scare the pants off them. I'm OK with that ;)
