Very enlightening

This book does a great job of articulating many of the issues that many dentists struggle with but don't have anyone to talk to about. There are a lot of things in practice that we dentists often don't know how to handle or what to do with and this book clearly points out that most of those problems ultimately can be traced back to the dentist/owner not setting up policies or providing the leadership to manage or prevent them. We go to school to become dentists and sometimes resent the fact that we have to be business owners. Changing our perspective on the business side of things from something we "have" to do to something we "get" to do can make all the difference. Dr. Cooper answers questions from different dentists to address many of the common problems facing dentists. It was a very interesting read and I learned a lot about myself and changes I need to make in my practice and my leadership style. Highly recommended!

Absolutely Terrible; Meaningless Self-Help Babble

I have no idea what book the other reviewers read, because this book is terrible. It is full of absolutely pointless sloganeering and clich�s. His "advice" is nothing but soaring feel-good rhetoric that is utterly devoid of any real content or concrete suggestions. His points are endlessly repetitive--he can take one thought about something--say "passion"-- and spend an entire paragraph filled with sentences beginning "Passion is..." over and over. It's completely pointless.
As if that's not bad enough, half of his "advice" is just finding ways to talk about how awesome his consulting business is, and how it will solve all your problems: self-marketing in disguise. It's nauseating. Maybe he has the interpersonal skills to "wow" an audience while he's speaking live, but this book is all sizzle and no steak.
This book is nothing but feel-good, meaningless self-help psycho-babble. Don't waste your money or your time. I'd give it zero stars if that were possible.

A good start...

Cooper does a fantastic job of articulating the difference between weighted words that are often thrown around as if they were interchangeable. For example, there are several entries that distinguish ownership, management, and leadership. It is informative, emphasizes personal responsibility and accountability, and is executed with brevity and effectiveness. I also enjoyed the question/answer format that made it a quicker read.
However, my critique of this book is that many of the questions start to become redundant and although the book is divided into themes that may bring about the nuances of ownership, leadership, and management, it could be improved by introducing more variety in the questions.
Much of the information regarding integrity, ethics, and communication are points that I find obvious. That makes me worry about the average dentist if Cooper feels this is subject matter that needs elaboration.
