"Reading this was a pleasure." - Gregory Benford, Nebula Award winning author of TIMESCAPE.

Jaret Vralik is a household name, even on Epsilon Eridani b. Part scientist and part daredevil, Vraliks career of jumping a flying laboratory through the strongest storms in our solar system make him the perfect man to investigate the continent wide megastorms plaguing the only surviving colonists to land there. Will he survive the long fall into the maelstrom, or will his past come back to haunt him?

Originally featured in the EXTREME PLANETS anthology from Chaosium Press, "Maelstrom" features an introduction from EXTREME PLANETS editors David Conyers and David Kernot.

I liked how the science was well woven into the narrative ...
By SF Edwards
This was quite an engaging short story. The main character is personable and not over the top, though from his profession one would assume he was. The way the author cuts back and forth between the events of the main story and flashes back are handled well with smooth transitions. I liked how the science was well woven into the narrative and did not bog it down, letting the reader feel the tension of the main character. Highly recommended reading for those looking for a fun, adventurous, and quick read.

Skydiving Epsilon Eridani b
By Steve R
Highly enjoyable. Maelstrom first appeared in the anthology ‘Exoplanets,’ but I've only just read it as a stand-alone short. This stand-alone version was worth waiting for: it's got great cover art and includes an introduction by David Conners and David Kernot which provides some interesting backstory.

As to the story itself: Jaret is a thrill seeking scientist who jumps into tornados and hurricanes to collect data, then takes his skills to an earth-like exoplanet, Epsilon Eridani b (over twenty light years away) to aid human colonists. He brings with him a haunting memory from Earth, which he must relive as he jumps into a storm far more powerful than anything he’s ever experienced before.

Although it’s not explained just how humans can travel so quickly from our solar system to distant exoplanets (the story takes place in the late 21st century—we’ve clearly advanced a lot in just a short time), the drama is fantastic and the story very well written. It's certainly worth .99—buy this and a coffee and settle in.
