More books like this are needed for our young people to be prepared for the world. Language is off the wall...but it also is language that students hear every day from each other!!

The Future of Education

In an environment where standardized testing dominates institutionalized learning at the grade school level, university coursework must reach out and actively pull students onto the stage of the globalized world. It must teach students of their role in global events, the way in which events abroad determine--and are determined by--choices related to purchasing food, voting, and the consumption of natural resources. Textbooks can only hope to accomplish this feat by demonstrating the relevance of current events for students who lack any framework for digesting complex discourse on global politics, regional geography, and economics. The Plaid Avenger's World uses an innovative style of presentation to show students that they are indeed actors in processes outside of their immediate viewing areas. This textbook confronts students with real-world issues in a manner that both entertains and educates, but most importantly, guides students in a direction to engage and understand contemporary media after they finish reading the book.
The first pages of The Plaid Avenger's World introduce key concepts and definitions covered in most freshman-level social science courses: trends in development, population dynamics, and the like. Succeeding all necessary background, the book organizes the world into regions; e.g., Central Asia, Middle East/North Africa, etc. Professor Boyer navigates students through a short history of each region, thereafter setting himself up to position the region within the contemporary political arena. The pages of the text are littered with figures, graphs, and pictures (often containing hilarious captions) that complement the written portions with useful facts. Within each chapter, Professor Boyer also explains how characteristics shared by those living in a region define that specific region, giving legitimacy to the assignment of regions as well as showing how cultures vary around the globe. Final chapters synthesize earlier material to discuss terrorism, trade blocks, and other pressing concerns in today's world.
One point is noteworthy for teachers who are considering using The Plaid Avenger's World for a class. The author's training as a geographer is evident in the text. Explanations of factors that have stunted development in Central America, for instance, do not forget issues that transcend human relations: Central America faces earthquakes, volcanoes, floods, and other natural disasters at a higher frequency than do many other regions of the world. Thus, readers learn that physical geography limits infrastructural development. I have seen a number of introductory political studies textbooks that, while possessing similar aims in instruction, do not encompass as broad a scope as does The Plaid Avenger's World.

Professor John Boyer bridges the gap between students and academia by bringing world leaders to life. He captures and capitalizes on the personalities of figures like Vladimir Putin, an international buttocks-kicker whose strong grip on his country reflect his background as a KGB agent. The author's voice is usually present in a conversational capacity, employing off-the-wall humor, cartoons, silly games, references to pop culture, and an online site with interactive and entertaining quizzes (and webcasts discussing each week's current events) to elevate students to the level of 'participant' in their learning, whether they realize it or not. I'd like to send a big thanks to Professor Boyer for writing this and for giving me a foundation for understanding what goes on in the world.

Great resource for geography and history

A fun and entertaining read. The 7th edition is it with a high school edition with a bit less saucy language. This is a great resource for geography and world history teachers looking to beef up their knowledge or as an example of how to put the content into student language.
